interactive hardware

MOTIVATION In a course on Interactive Device Design, my project group was tasked to design an internet-enabled interactive device that solves a real problem for a concrete user group. Through a contextual inquiry at St. George Spirits, a distillery in Alameda, we found that distillery employees at a small scale spend over 40 hours a quarter measuring the volume of spirits in each barrel by hand using a dipstick.
solution We designed a device to help spirit-makers keep track of their product. It monitors the volume of liquid in a barrel and aggregates data in a web application. Our product won the Best Device Design Project award and was written up in Berkeley Engineering Magazine.
